Saline Celtic Festival Pipe and Drum Corps

Pipe and DrumsFive bands will perform at this year’s Saline Celtic Festival. These bands represent the best in Michigan and generally
place in the top positions in local competitions such as the games at Alma, MI and the St. Andrew’s games in Livonia, MI. Grade 1 is highest ranking and Grade 5 the lowest. Detroit Caledonian is ranked in Grade 4, and is the most competitively oriented of those at the Festival. Detroit Caledonians won Saline Celtic Festival band competition in both 2010 and 2011. The remaining bands are all Grade 5 and include: Cabar Feidh Pipes and Drums (Royal Oak, MI); Glen Erin Pipe Band (Lansing, MI); Grand Rapids and District Pipe Band (Grand Rapids, MI); and the Flint Scottish Pipe Band (Flint, MI). Most pipe bands, especially those not specifically geared towards competition classify as Grade 5. Cabar Feidh, Flint, and Grand Rapids routinely finish in the top three in regional competitions, and are all excellent pipe bands.

The massed bands, under the leadership of Senior Drum Major Don Bussell, will lead the Opening Ceremony at about
11:30 am. In the early afternoon, the bands will all participate in a judged competition. The competition will be Open (not by Grade) and will consist of a 2-parted 6/8 slow march and a 4-parted 6/8 quick march. Following the judged competition each band will perform 20-minute sets throughout the rest of the afternoon. A final massed-bands will occur at about 5:30 pm.
